Mary Shelley

Artistic Director Sandy Thomson has been commissioned to write a new play based on the life of Mary Wolstencraft Shelley, during her time in Dundee, a year before she wrote Frankenstein.

The two year period spent by the teenaged Mary Shelley in Dundee at a pivotal time in her and the country's history is largely unremarked.

By her own admission, this first time away from her family is the beginning of her storytelling career.

It was beneath the trees of the grounds belonging to our house, or on the bleak sides of the woodless mountains near, that my true compositions, the airy flights of my imagination, were born and fostered.
— Mary Shelley

She makes lifelong relationships in Dundee and meets Shelley for the first time during this period of her life. It is impossible not ot imagine that her experiences of Dundee in the early 19th century don't play into her subsequent works and life.

Sandy will be developing the play this summer with the Dundee Rep Ensemble.
